Why all the controversy over the new Top Model???

Allison and Aminat (together) Aminat came in 3rd, Allison came in 2nd...

Teyona, the winner for Cycle 12, as you can see, she is very pretty, and quite photogenic....

This is really a ladies discussion, but you men are welcome to chime in if you want to....
I came upon this discussion on another site, and I admit I was floored! I remember how HP used to always talk about how very racist ww were and how they refused to let any woman of color have the spotlight-as well as how they would work to retain a pedestal, they claimed not to have.

Many times I have seen exactly what he was talking about, but rarely is it this blatant. For those of you who do not watch, Tyra crowned Teyona the newest top model. Teyona is, as you can see an attractive young woman with much on the ball. Now keep in mind all through the season, Teyona had very strong pictures, and proved herself to be very ambitious and hardworking. I don't believe she was ever in the bottom two. Aminat, who came in third, had a fabulous body, as Tyra kept pointing out, but her pictures were lukewarm. So despite a strong showing in the commercial, she was eliminated. The third contestant of the top 3 was a small, waif looking wg. She was very sweet with big doe eyes, and a gentle nature. However, although she did well toward the end, the judges complained that many of her pics had little variety, and she was chosen as 2nd runner up. Well need I say all hell broke free! WW were up in arms saying that Tyra only chose Teyona because she was black! They are truly livid! They are saying things such as how can a blk girl beat out all those wgs? -WTH!- They are calling for a recount, and calling Tyra racist! They are talking about banning the show, and emailing in complaints en masse!
I just have a little question. How come when Nicole (almost eliminated twice- wg) beat out Nic (who was blk and far more exotic looking ) how come they didn't come out en masse then and raise hell? How come when Yoanna -super bitch-let me spend all day talking about ppl-ww) beat out beautiful biracial Mercedes, (who outlooked her, out stomped her, and out pictured her constantly)- how come they didn't stampede and email complaints en masse then? They actually had the nerve to be saying things like "That's the 4th time a bg beat out a wg for the title! " Hello, Alot of ppl were unhappy with last season's winner, but because she was white, there didn't seem to be much controversy at all. I was unhappy with the plus sized winner because I felt like she really proved herself to be a very nasty person. I thought she was really pretty, but butt ugly on the inside. I remember watching her mess with the biracial girl as she tried to sleep. She and the two other ww sat beside her bed and talked about her like a dog. When the girl asked them to go away, they laughed, and grew more vicious in their taunts. Yet this is the exact type of behavior Tyra is quick to send the bgs home for. (Monique, Camilla, or the red headed bg anyone?) Yet this wg won after repeatedly acting like a class A bitch almost the entire time. Personally, I feel like if Tyra has displayed any favoritism, it has been directed to the wgs-not the blk ones. But I understand she is doing everything in her power not to be labeled unfair. Heaven forbid, a bw display favoritism toward other bw -even though we have ww like the former editor of Cosmopolitan blatantly, and proudly stating that as long as she was editor and chief -no black woman would ever be on the cover of Cosmo! You see it seems it's ok for a ww to blatantly be for ww, but how dare a woman of color ever dare try to help another WOC! Did anyone besides me notice how twiggy (when she was on) would fight tooth and nail for the wg's while simultaneously throwing the girls of color under the bus? It got to be so blatant, I almost stopped watching. It was so funny to me listening to them rant angrily about why didn't Cecelia win or why didn't Alison win? They are truly furious because they seem to feel EVERYTHING should be for WW! What I want to know first of all is, why was Cecelia even there??? They (WW) were going on about how gorgeous she was, and how gorgeous Alison was, but (not to be cruel) I thought Cecelia was one of the most unattractive models I've seen in a long time, and I thought Allison was only cute. Am I imagining things, or is anything white and female instantly transported to the higher echelon of beautiful, stunning, breath taking, etc. Now to be fair, I didn't find the last two remaining bg's beautiful either. Neither one of them was Gabriel, Beyonce, Megan Good or the like, but I thought the top 3 were attractive. Teyona, I thought was pretty, with Allison, and Aminat being cute. I do remember a cycle of Top model where ALL the bgs were gorgeous Evia, Yaya, Tocarra, and Kelly, this cycle was not like that. but like I said, I thought the top 3 were all attractive, not beautiful (just my opinion-if you disagree-that's cool) It's just the way they raved over how beautiful Alison was, and how beautiful Ceceila was, and I was like, was I watching the same show?? I really feel like they're calling these (I cute, I unattractive ) women beautiful because they are white, and I take issue with that, as well as them acting like how dare Tyra pick the one she chose instead of the one WW WANTED! I take issue with that as well. Has she not been in the business for years? Is it not HER show? Is it not her company? Then somebody please explain to me why it would not ultimately be HER DECISION??? Below is a sample of the site -along with site information....Tell me what you think.....

Some comments (mostly ww)
I knew Allison at LSU, but with that bias aside, she should have won.

i wanted celia or allison to win they were so good

CHARLENE OKAY PEOPLE SAY THEY WERE SURPRISE TEYONE WON? HOW THEY WERE PUSHING HER THIS WHOLE ENTIRE SEASON AND AMINAT WAS TYRA'S FAVORITE THAT'S HOW SHE GOT THAT FAR BECAUSE HER PHOTOS ALWAYS SUCKED BUT THEY KEPT HER THERE WEEK AFTER WEEK. I WAS PUSHING FOR ALLISON I THOUGHT SHE HAD AN AMAZING FACE AND A PERSONALITY THAT ANYONE COULD FALL IN LOVE WITH. SHE ALREADY AS TWO MANAGEMENT OFFERS SO IM NOT WORRIED ABOUT HER WELL GOOD LUCK TO ALL THREE. I AM ALSO HAPPY THEY SAID PAULINA WAS FUNNY AND COOL AND NOT EGOTISTICAL BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY PERSON ON THAT SHOW WITH AN EGO HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF MY FAVORITE CELEBRITIES MS. TYRA BANKS I LOVE YOU BUT YOUR * ONCE THERE WAS A SUPERMODEL WHO PULLED OUT HER RULE TO OWNING YOU INNER FIERCENESS? COME ON ON TYRA...

I am disappointed that Allison didn't win, but I thought long ago that they were pushing Teyona, so it wasn't really a big surprise. I liked Aminat, but Allison should have won over Teyona.

Paulina getting fired was a shocker, why did they do it? She had a nice vibe. This is just like last season with McKey winning. Second year in a row that the cute perky blond girl came in second.

It is about the pictures, and not the personality for selling Cover Girl.
I really wanted Allison to win....she seems the most genuine out of the 3 and had a more unique look.
Allison should have won!!!! It is obvious that Teyona and Aminat were Tyra's favorites, Allison had way better pictures the whole time and did way better on the runway during the last show. Sooo unfair, but at the same time expected from Tyra Banks. i'll tell u all why Allison did not win, cause Tyra's racist. Even my husband could tll and he's a man. The reason why they fired Paulina was because she was pushing more towards Allison, tyra is the one behind this, I know. Have u all noticed that all the women judges change every other year and the men stay the same??? Tyra must have some ego...and attitude problems..racist, she always picks her kind.

I agree that tyra showed favoritism for the Black females, and im not even white or black. im Hispanic. But it showed. the one thing people here havent mentioned is that when the show was at its climax, Allison won the runway, and she also won in what they were saying about the pics. so how does Tyra have the nerve to say * WE" have come to a decision. I bet thats why Paulina got fired. lol I don't know how Allison didn't win. The judges all had more positive things to say about her and her pictures and she did a way better job on the runway. Tyra called Teyona a robot on the runway!! I think Allison has come along way in this show and should have come out the winner. I hope she signs with a modeling company and goes far!!!

We will see Allison again not sure if we will see Teyona in another year.

sarah Thu,-I'm totally disagreeing with Teyona winning!

Allison should have won! She's far more exotic.

TO NUMBER 14 Thu, May 14, 2009, 5:22 PM TO NUMBER 14 Thu, May 14, 2009, 5:23 PM MAY I REMIND YOU THAT WHITNEY DID NOT DESERVE TO WIN CYCLE 10 BUT SHE DID BECAUSE TYRA WAS PUSHING FOR A PLUS SIZE GIRL WHO SHE REALLY LIKED(WHITNEY WAS HER FAVORITE

mer Thu, May -I loved Allison. I thought she had such a sweet personality and her photos were great. She improved so much from the beginning of the show! Good Luck Allison! Silver

Thu-ugh i wanted Allison to win DISAPOINTED in the judges

lea Thu-alison should of won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 26.wiz Thu,-ALLISON IS SO MUCH BETTER

whocares Thu, -This show was rigged from the beginning and you knew it. I am not saying Teyona was not good. But Allison rocked that runway and they did nto excpet that. And this is the first season that I noticed how biased Tyra was. I loved when Eva wont she deserved it. But this time Tyra was wrong.

jacki Thu, May -BOYCOTT ANTM! It's never been more obvious that this show is RIGGED. Allison was the obvious win, I'm not wasting more time watching that crud!! CJ Thu, May 14,

2009, 5:38 PM I'm amused that people are calling Tyra racist seeing as more than half of the winners of ANTM have been white XD Good fail...sure she's a b**** but that's hilarious xD Anyway, I'm depressed Allison lost but kudos to them all! 30.un-photogenic -I soooooo think Allison should have won! She is the prettiest girl I've ever seen and her photos were....I'm speechless. teyona's photos were just average. Well, best of luck to Allison and I hope she makes it HUGE! I'd also like to say that over anyone i've met you have the least reason to be self concious! So live long and prosperous! (wow I'm such a dork)

Josh Thu, May 14- Allison should have one! I screamed when Tyra didn't call her up!

tyne Thu, May 14-Allison should have won the title. She's genuine, beautiful, loyal, not into herself, composed herself professional...I'm truley upset she did not win as she deserved it!!! deana
Thu, May -i wanted allison to win for sure. she is way prettier and i liked her pictures more. i though aminat should have went home a looong time ago her pictures were not great at all. she looked like danielle that won a few seasons ago except she didnt deliver in her pictures like dani. i hope allison gets a modeling job because she deserves it! WTF

Thu, May 14-Those idiots who are pulling the race card a stupid.Just because a black girl won doesnt mean she doesnt desrve it and that she didnt work hard.If you people watched the whole season like i did, you would see through out the whole season allison did bad, she kept giving the same facials exspresisions. Its only the last 4 episodes when she stepped it up.Celia and teyona were the front runners for the whole season, and one of them oviously teyna had to win. This racist thing is dumb, because im pretty sure,if tyra was white, and she picked allison then its all good with you, but now that she picked a black girl your ******* wtf, any ways, i watched the whole season, and teyona honestly did very well allison did well in photos not so much in runways and photoshoots.Stop hating on the girl, she honestly beat allison fair and square. smore

Thu, -The thing that annoyed me the most was how Tyra kept disagreeing with Nigel * Paulina on how pictures looked. For a lot of the pics, Paulina * Nigel would say it was OK while Tyra would rant on how amazing it was. Remember the pic that Tyra shot? Paulina * Nigel HATED it but Tyra kept saying how beautiful it was. It's becoming clearer that the show is just a way she promotes her own personal agenda. She found plus-size models, African American, and mixed-race models. The show kept trying to push Teyona as a fan favorite so we'd all be happy when she won, but everyone loved Allison. I also don't get why they kept saying Aminat was so beautiful, she looks so plain compared to Teyona and Allison. ravana

Thu,-Did anyone else notice that from the beginning of the final stage of competition they only really followed what Teyona was saying. They would always point the camera at her, not Allison, and at one point she was standing right there and Mr. Jay was talking to them bothj. It becomes pretty obvious who the winner is gonna be if you focus almost the entire hour on that person. I don't really care who won, but I have and always will be an Allison fan!! joy

Thu, May-i also thought allison should've won... she's more internationational looking than the others. i will not be surprised if i see her photographs in well known fashion magazines... Caila

Thu, -Allison should have won! I cried when she didn't! She was gorgeous in a weird way, which was why I really wanted her to win. go allison

Thu, -when tyra said that allison and teyona were neck to neck on the competition...all i said what wtf are you talking about? clearly allison is 100 steps ahead of teyona *** horrible season winner.

Noelle Thu,-I wanted Allison to win and think she was the most deserving. But I knew Teyona would win, you could tell Tyra favored her from early on. meg

Thu, -whoa...this is like the fourth season that a black girl and white girl have made it to the finals, and the black girl won... examples: neyema and kaylen, danielle and joanie, siliesha and chantal, and now teyona over allison. i agree with everyone here, tyra plays favorites in every season, often choosing a black girl over an obviously more talented white girl. i'm not necessarily.....

It goes on and on like this (blatant racism) Now tell me if the bg is BETTER-why shouldn't she win? The last poster seems indignant that Tyra would have the nerve to choose a bg over a wg under ANY circumstance!!! Now this is just a sample, but did yall hear how they kept raving over how beautiful this little wg was? How many of yall thought she was so outstandingly beautiful? Lets keep it real. I thought Teyona was more attractive than her, but that's not why she won (I don't think) I just felt that Teyona really, really wanted it! Ppl tend to get the things they really really want, because they work extra hard for them. I really feel like more and more ww show their racism, yet are given a pass for it. No one seems to want to call them on it. This is why I loved HP's blog so much. He was never afraid to call them on it....

WW, they are just brats. They hate coming in second especially to a black woman. They have tghe lowest self-esteem that's why shows like Dr. Phil are ranked high because they come on the show in record numbers. I'm sorry, I'm venting, I'm just sick of them really. It's always me me me with them. I miss HP too.

I think a lot of ww, are starting to feel their pedstal being pulled from underneath them. As I was at the mall yesterday I saw a lot of advirtisments up from payless, bath & body works, and some other stores i can't remember with black women (dark skin) at the front window.

we have men(espeically wm) praising First Lady Michelle Obama for her beauty and grace. Recently on a MTV movie review from ordianary people there were men on there saying how much they love Zoe's character and an interracial couple (bw/wm) were interview as well saying how much they loved the movie.

this is only the beginning. And even when I go out, I can sense their insecurity when I walk, have my head up, and have an air of confidence about myself. And the men sense it too.

I wouldn't worry about these women, because their voices are gonna get shut in the end. Why are they so worried about this show, when they have plenty of other shows they can watch and be catered to. these women i tell you. They need to be told every minute of the the hour of how supposedly beautiful they are. and if one show even dares to challenge that they are up in arms. leave them in their grief. the world is moving on without them.

not that it matters, but haven't they had 12 seasons and how many black women have won vs. white women? haven't the majority of winners still been white...so what's the issue again?

It sounds like what the anon is asking is why are ww so up in arms when they are the ones who have been mostly winning

Taylor-Sara said...

Yes Anon they have had 12 seasons. Evia won season 3. Danielle won season 6, Salisha won season 9, and now Teyona has won season 12. They actually have more than one season per yr. Two other winners have been Woc. A Spanish girl (Jazline), and a multi racial non-wh. girl. All the other winners
(6) have been ww.....

I have come to realise that a lot of ww need Jesus in their lives and I am not being silly, because they praise themselves as they are Goddesses, they want to be should be worshipped, adored and everyone in the world wants to be them, is in love with them.

God made people in his own image and he likes variety, but lot of ww cannot see it.
I watched a programme once and they mentioned about many men found Penelope Cruz very beautiful. They argued on the television, how they really couldn't see it, only one said, she could see what men liked about Penelope, but being beautiful, no!

They can't see beauty in every race, only white girls with blonde hair, blue eyes are beautiful.
One of the biggest problems with being God, you have to be perfect and above hate and jealously, they are not and when people disagree with them, they get extremely angry, tearful and very abusive.

I even heard a story once, when a couple of ww came to UK, with some bw, the wm were interested in the bw and ww were furious and told on a blog what is wrong with ww in England.

I watch ANTM and I agree Teynona was the strongest.

I was wondering what hoopla would result in all of this.
So how is it that Tyra favors the BW, but McKee won last cycle - She was totally awkward in the beginning.

I have to read all of what was posted, but only until ww get that white is right, the best, and the only way to live, then we will continue to have this crap going on.

It's not only ww who do this. It's non bw in general. Aw and hw just hide in the shadow of ww.As you read those vicious comments u can see that they joined in too. Please ignore these idiots! I didn't watch ANTM, but I did happen to see a shot of the 3 finalists, and my only thought when I saw the white girl was "Whoa - she is strange looking and bordering on ugly". I know that models don't have to be "beautiful" like beauty queens, but based on looks alone, I would not have chosen the white finalist. But the white finalist will probably have a decent career no matter what because there is so much more work for white models than for black models.

Hey I just want to mention and yes it's BET believe me I don't watch anything on BET but this show.

It's called my Black is Beautiful and comes on Sundays at 12pm depending on your time zone etc. Other than that I don't watch BET.

I wasn't able to read all of this article, but once I do I'm sure I'll have more comments. I think Teyona and Aminant (btw, beautiful names) should have been the last two. Aminant is so gorgeous I love her lips( there just like mines), but that's besides the point. I think they had to throw the wg in the last two, in order to not stir up drama it didn't seem to work though. to me she was a bit awkward and sickly looking.

"You see it seems it's ok for a ww to blatantly be for ww, but how dare a woman of color ever dare try to help another WOC"

Uhmmmm totally agree, I also don't understand why some black women question other black women, who are for other black women only. Just my thoughts.

Can you write an article on movies by Tyler Perry as well as movies like a Good Man is Hard to Find. It's sad because it's like people are copying Tyler Perry movies.

Hill Harpers character being a low life (which is funny because he told her that she need to probably leave him etc. and find someone on her level etc.)
The educated high salaried bw against the po bm etc.

Seriously why can't we make romantic movies where the characters first meet and the bw meets a man on her level.

Or a family drama as before, but with a man on her level.

Hell even though Hill Harpers character turned out to be an ass (probably because he was on her level etc.)he and the lead actress actually had more chemistry.

my mom even noted (all giddy about it) that most black movies she's seen have the black church in it. No problem with church films, I love movies like Facing the Giants (wonderful film) but some of what that paster said was a bit unnerving to me or it just rubbed me the wrong.

These white women who are complaining about Tyra showing favoritism are just revealing their own racism and their belief in being superior to other women simply for being white!

Ick this the very reason I think black men and white women are perfect for each other they think they're superior to everyone else.

I do hate how women of other races do view black women as beneath them. I know not all non-white women and white women are racist but the ones who are racist do love to make black women feel inferior to them.

I do plan on being the best I can be despite the fact that others want me to be less than because of my color!

ITA!

There is no real sense of sisterhood between the different group that comprise WoC. It was a no-no to talk about this on HP's blog but my experience is that Asian women and Latinas can be just as racist as ww when it comes to BW. A lot of them are just wannabe ww ayway.

@ Sara, I live in the same state as Allison-Louisiana and there are people here who are still living in the past. Those ww do not like their pedestals being touch. Also, Allison to me looked odd and pasty...although she did have a few nice pictures.

Ladies let me clearify something, and saying this will make some of you angry, but I don't care. I am for BLACK WOMEN FIRST!!! What that means is although I wish Aw, Hw, and even Ww the best of luck, I am about bettering life for BLACK WOMEN! Think about it for a moment, the most powerful groups in this country ALWAYS put themelves first, regardless of their cause. That is because to dilute your energy trying to include everyone, is weakening, and counterproductive-and they know this. Liken it to a disasterous tornado or flood. You know the town is about to be destroyed. You don't want anyone to be hurt (duh) but you know you have to save your family BEFORE you try to offer help to your neighbors. This is the way I see it. We have unique problems that many Hw and Aw do not have, and they are almost NEVER concerned with our problems. When they come together to discuss their problems (and how to solve them) -we are not even on the radar. We'd be fools to put their problems in a paramount position, when we have so many of our own. We need to save our own houses first- BEFORE we try to help the neighbor, (who has often lived near us for years, and never even spoken...)

Sara,
Thanks for reminding us that your priority is the betterment of BW. The ugly truth is that, although there may be some NON-BW who are sympathetic towards BW (and the unique problems we face in American culture), MOST NON-BW look down on BW and do their part to promote ANTI-BW HATE in the way BW are viewed/treated.

THANK YOU!

During my nearly 15 years online, I have lurked on many ethnicity-based forums, and believe me Asians, Latinos and Native Americans, when amongst themselves, are only a little less likely to b@tch and moan about Blacks and than the members of Stormfront are. One of the Latino boards actually had several AA members and that only seemed to spur on many of the Latinos members to see just how much hate they could conjure up for Blacks.

It's not just that bp don't realize that in order for a culture/race to do better they will clean their own house first. Imigrants will help imigrants get a job before they help others.

As I said in a post before there is a bw who has a film company dedicated to the empowerment of woc in the film industry. I think it's cool and all, but seriously does this women really think when the AW, HW, IW get into Hollywood as actors, directors, producers, studio execs that they are going to take the bw with them? No! They are going to take AW, HW, IW etc. and even the men who will then do the same for other men.
I also mentioned another woman who was complaining because when the first women who became an exec in Hwood got in she didn't bring in bw she brought in ww. I was like well duh. Who did you think she would bring in?

Also I think what brings lack of respect is how we present ourselves or let ourselves be presented. Stop yelling nothing but a bm, stop defending, apologizing and working ourselves to the bone or to early death for bm men and a community that doesn't even appreciate our efforts enough to even reciprocate. Stop doing all of these black love and black unity when all you see is bw in the crowd. It should tell many of these bw that there is something not right if this has been going on year after year.

Also be open and meet people from all types of cultures. I want to travel as much as I can. People can't learn from people they rarely see and if they do it's in a negative light.

I am working with a ww who will turn on a dime. One minute she is nice and then another she is making negative comments about my work. I am on a 90 day probation; therefore, I must watch my ps and qs. I believe her superior behavior is her insincerity rearing its head.

I totally agree. Some act as if you do not exist...until you can give them something to benefit them.

It's like I've been saying for years. ww think that they are God's gift to the world and any one that doesn't hold this view has something wrong with them. Like you said, I never heard anyone complaining when ww won ANTM, even though several times the bw they were up against were more attractive than them.I also agree with an earlier post that ww are beginning to feel more threatened as they feel their pedestal slowly but steadily being pulled away from them. bw are, in large numbers, realizing that the belief that non black men don't find us attractive is a MYTH.

btw I love love love this blog. Keep up the good work!!!

Excellent post Sara

Only when you position yourself in the BEST most OPTIMAL position, mentally, physically, spiritually, psychological, educational - and overall health, happiness and well being with the resources to sustain and maintain that position - can you consider assisting another groups agenda, especially if they are competing for the same resources and have no qualms about hurting using others to satisfy their needs at the expense of others. Surviving is not enough thriving i.e. having sufficient resources to weather a storm and remain firmly in place and to create options is the goal.

I just came from Siditty's blog and now I remember why I stopped going. That was more no body loves bm pity party than I can take. Not only that, but some of them had more hate in them than I could bare.

I love Sarahs, Z's, Evias blogs because they focus on the positives. Some of the negatives, or what to watch out for, but these blogs don't dwell on it. Sorry but I have to go shake that crap off.

I must say I agree with all that has been written. Black Women just cannot afford everyone else in our struggles that's just too high a price to pay.

As for ANTM I didn't watch it this season it's more about Tyra and less about the young ladies but the season I did watch it looked to me that Tyra was always on the black females case about this or that a little harder than the white females.

I think Tyra is getting more like Oprah the constant catering to a white female fan base.

White women get the most plastic surgery in this country, they get the most weaves, the most makeup, and get tans several times a year. They display the most blatant forms of self hatred, and the last thing they want it to lose to a beautiful woman of color. I was disgusted when nicole won season 5 (or was it 6) of ANTM because she was a total bratty bitch, I couldn't stand her at all. The fat white girl who won (I forgot her name) was disgusting inside AND out and I don't think she deserved to win. If anything, the first plus sized girl to win should have been Toccarra, but Toccarra won in the end anyway since she's one of the few women that was on that show that's still working. I hate Tyra, she feeds into the racism and does nothing about it even though she has the power to, and you're right she does grill the black girls on that show WAY more than the white ones, which also makes my stomach turn. I can't stand that show or Tyra anymore, that's why I haven't watched it since season 10.

Notice that the pedestal white women are on supposedly proclaims their femininity and what really burns my bacon is the so called Strong Black woman stereotype. What they mean by strong as in we can take it like a man. That really makes me mad. White women supposedly envying our strength yeah right!

If certain white women wanna be strong how come these so called feminist white women cry victim and demand everyone saves them when things don't go their way.

Pampered stuck up princesses whining about a beautiful black woman being chosen over Plain Jane Allison!

Allison is a plain Jane compared to Teyona.

And what gets me annoyed is seeing Bollywood movies white ww in them. I don't mind ww being in them, but everytime they are there there are always blonde ones the guys are googling all over. Let an Indian woman have a movie googling over wm and you see a whole different attitude. I hope that Indian men aren't going to end up doing Indian women the way bm have come to treat us. It's almost like they can date, marry ww are starting to show ww as the idea (which in a way parallels bm/bw colorism), but an Indian women doing that is considered a sell out or doesn't love her Indian heritage. Now instead of just showing light skinned Indian women (yes you have Indian men who are light, but notice they can be dark, but the girl should be light)they are overtly showing blonde white girls shaking their asses. The whole saying darkies will be lucky to find someone and shouldn't be picky with men women is the kind of ish my grandmother and other bp used to say to my mother when she was younger. The whole you are cute, but I don't do dark etc. It's like WTF

Actually I'm starting to see that Indians have more in common with us than we think.

I feel its best if we stop making disparaging comments about other people's blogs, especially when they are fellow black women who are also laboring under the same unfair social treatment, beauty standards etc, and are trying to explore/fight those injustices in their own ways.
If she (Siddity) is unhappy in her marriage why not support her instead of insulting her. Didn't she lose a child a little while ago. That's got to be difficult and all the more reason for some uncritical encouragement and direction.
I think its often very difficult for black people (particularly black women) to escape all the self loathing messages that permeate the world we live in. I know subconsciously it affected me as a child and still does today. And I know despite them being grown women, it affected my mother, my aunts, my sister, my grandmother and almost all of the adult black women I've met. We're all dealing with these things in different ways, and we have different perspectives. Tearing someone down for expressing how they felt the world has disregarded them as a black female doesn't help the cause of black women realizing their self worth and extolling the virtues of elevating black women to their rightful places in the world.
We have made some incredible strides; I look at the incredibly talented black women in my family, lawyers, doctors, accountants, teachers, scientists, and I see proof of that daily. But in this harsh world, we need to be kinder and more supportive to each other, especially when we essentially agree about improving the lot of black women(in our own ways).
I know I'm probably going to get attacks for this, but when I see all the crap that black women have to face on a daily basis, I hate to see women who want black women to have all the opportunities in the world tearing each other down. Its self defeating. And you rarely see other minorities groups doing this.

She called them the black mafia then all of a sudden shouted "Black people were not the only ones enslaved!" OK. First off, wp have privilege that comes to them AUTOMATICALLY since the day they are born because they're white. Second, wp go out of their way to promote/hire wp. Third, the ONLY reason that friend was working their was because her MOM is the head of the department. Don't get me started on how much work/effort bw have to show before we're even acknowledged! I couldn't even react. I said goodnight and hung up.

I agree with Sara though. Us first, because best believe most women of other races will do nothing but obstruct our path towards the top.

Hello A.

Of course marriage is, but doesn't the woman have control over steering the relationship in that direction? Isn't that what the BF empowerment/IR bloggers are trying to impart to AA women?

He can only go as far as you let him right?

And all of the bloggers have stressed vetting.

I know of a few AA/Carribean women who are married to East Indian men and there is even a blog by a woman about her marriage to her East Indian husband.

My point was that for all the skin color issues within the East Indian community some East Indian men still express a very strong attraction to BW with typical AA phenotypes.

@this post, spot on!

Yes the twiggy thing was so blatant but as you said, ww have become so used to being catered to that they don’t even see how utterly self-centred and self catering they are being, even when everyone around them is getting uncomfortable with it.

This is the privilege of white women; to be so utterly and totally self-focused and feel ‘no way’ about being so.

One key reason why I love top model, is because for the first time, a panel made up of predominately ‘black and minority’ judges gets to decided what is beautiful. It is totally unprecedented. And so I tend to cut Tyra slack for so many other things because she has single handedly ensured that a black girl is taken seriously and seen as a contender in such modelling competitions where they would have simply been brushed aside. even the white girls know now they cannot dismiss their fellow black contestants.

Indeed, if you ever watch top model in other countries, you can see how again and again, black girls suffer the same fate as a result of the dynamic of ‘not being taken seriously as modelling material because of their color’, of course there is always the 'cover story' as to why they had to go, but it is still the same ol' protecting of the 'place' for a white female.

It has got to a point where incredulity surrounds the very idea of a bw putting herself forward for a top model competition.

In general, our problem as bw continues to be us not wanting to wake up to reality for a variety of reasons, therefore alowing others to play us 'full time'. The question is, can bw afford to drop the denial that makes them exploitable. If the answer is yes, then the antics of ww will be 'small fry' which bw will effectively counteract.

As for feminism, as far as i am concerned and in my mind, my model of feminism is that of concentric circles, with bw at the very centre, and my concern radiates outwards, getting less and less the more the woman is served by white supremacy, racism and patriarchy; in other words bw at the very centre of my concern and efforts, with white women on the outer side.

Supposing I wanted to Date a White Guy...?

Taylor-Sara said...

Very well said Halima.
Those are my sentiments exactly. I am 'concerned' about other women. AFTER bw... The idea that we should put 'other' minority women on par with our problems is sheer lunacy! Reciprocity extends to everything, and if you notice, we are never even mentioned amoung their issues, and many of them feel no kinship with bw at all. I have a friend who has a gorgeous wh (think david Beckman) she says the chinese women (in Cali) constantly glare at her when they see her with him. (like how dare you take one of OURS!!!) WTH! She says her husband cracks up when she tells him-then he says "Do I look chinese?" They both think it's hilarious, but I find it rather telling, why would they care?

Delishmish said...

I am laughing (and agreeing) with the comments by Halima and Sara..

Every now and again, I feel the need to be a little bit politically correct and restrain myself somewhat, because an UN- fettered Delish seems to send some people over the rails. The REAL truth is, I am for the BW!
I show that with my ACTIONS. I put "me" first, second and third and fourth..but you don't have to always tell your opponent what your next move is..;-)I know there are women of other minorities who have done positive things for me, so I do try to leave a bit of room for them in my sphere too...and since we are in this medium, it goes without saying that all people are not cut from the same cloth.

The women who I find MOST hostile to MY agenda ARE white women...specifically American white women, but they are GOING to have to learn a new way....not that I care one way or another honestly. I am not trying to minimize any impact on them, or any person I don't know. Man or woman. My heart does not cry for "Missy Anne" because her way of life is ending.

WW do all kinds of subtle things on a daily basis to assert their superiority. For example, I notice they love to cut in front on you when walking or try to speed up and cross in front of you. If I'm in a room, the seat next to me is invariable the last one to be occupied. Once in a mtg, a ww actually pulled up a chair to the table although there was clearly a seat vacant beside me. I just chuckled to myself.

WW want to intimidate us so they will try subtle ways at first, then get downright nasty if that doesn't work. I decided a long time ago that no one would ever stop me from doing something or run me away from anything. So many black women have it going on on a level that ww wish they could get to. Do I hate WW? Of course not. But my guard is up around them.

I'm in England and the ANTM Cycle discussed hasn't been aired yet. Reading this post has been interesting. These white women seem to be calling Tyra bias towards Black women but does the winner not get a Cover Girl contract? I can't help but feel that the 4 judges we see are not the only judges. Surely (unofficially ofcourse) Cover Girl also has a say in who wins because it's their campaign. What I mean is would the contract still be part of the prize if there was a problem with "too many" Black women winning. I agree with one of the comments I read earlier which, I think, was basically saying white women are realising they're being knocked off their pedestal so their claws are coming out in a desperate attempt to stay on top. For the first time they seem to be seeing Black women as competition; competition in beauty, in work, in love. Black women are a force to be reckoned with and I'm proud to be one, Black African actually.

Anonymous said...

If you really look at the situation, ww really don't see WoC (especially BW) as any real competition, and THAT is the real reason they're so angry when one too many BW wins these types of contests. To them, a beautiful black woman is still not as beautiful as a beautiful white woman. So, when one BW wins, she just a token to placate Blacks. But, if too many BW are winning then it's just all BS -- a sham, a joke. In the ww's minds. those BW are winning due to racial politics or favoritism...but it's never because they actually look better than the white girls.

First of all, beauty is subjective, y'all. I agree that there is a lot of arrogance and racism among women. From my observation, the mostly white judges in Top Model tend to favor white models. Asian models are often overlooked. That said, Tyra vacillates between white and black/non-white models. Since it's her show, she does have a right to make her own decision - duh. I have seen judges favor white models even though I preferred the beauty of one black model. At other times, I have seen black models favored for reasons unclear to me. White women need to get over themselves. And women in general need to get over themselves. It really is a superficial show, and "fashion" can be really stupid. Don't worry, you really didn't need to include the last line about you being Asian. Anyone with two brain cells could have guessed it after reading the first line of your post. Your only concern seemed to be for the Asian models who get overlooked, so naturally, I assumed you were Asian (and I was right). And did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, the Asian models that you felt were 'overlooked' on the show just had a sort of beauty that wasn't 'preferred' or 'favoured' (your words not mine) by the judges?! But it seems you didn't think the Black models were 'overlooked'. That, you chose to reserve only for the Asian ones.

Coming to think of it, I can only remember a handful of Asian models on the show. Right now, only one actually comes to mind and she was half-white and had some VERY serious issues with her ethnicity! So these 'very few' Asian models could possibly, have just not had 'it', but no, according to you, they were 'overlooked'. But the MANY Black models who get passed over on the show for some plain jane who couldn't even perfect her walk, just didn't have a 'favoured' look. And as you stated, the Black models who did get it did so for reasons 'unclear' to you. Get the ish outta here!!!

Taylor-Sara said...

Jailmaster, I know exactly who you are talking about! April. she hated being half Asian, and always tried to talk about how her father was white, but never wanted to talk about her mother. When Janice called her an ethnic model, I thought she was going to freak!

JaliliMaster said...

Yes Sara, her name was April. I can even remember the silly young woman actually getting angry at her mother on the show as it was her mothers 'fault' that she was Asian. I was like......my Lord! She was always so annoyed whenever any of the judges mentioned that she could be an inspiration to young Asian girls. I remeber that once, her reply to this was...(after she had, apparently, 'accepted' her Asianness)...."okay, I'd be an inspiration for Asian girls, but I want to be an inspiration to white girls too!". I can't even imagine a Black model on the show uttering such nonsense.

Taylor-Sara said...

Your right J.M. she would almost NEVER be an inspiration to wgs because they will almost NEVER see her as white! Anyone could see how Asian she looked. I didn't even know she was half white until she began constantly telling everyone. She reminded me of Tiger Woods. Constantly denying his blackness when you can see it all over his face! April acted the same way about being Asian....

Anonymous said...

Jalili, why are you racist against Asians? Why do you think that only black and white models are attractive? All races of people can be attractive. I also pointed out that white models are favored by the judges. It is also true that only white and black models win as the top model. Because beauty is subjective, I may not always agree with the white judges. That is why I sometimes do not agree with white judges when they favor a white model. Jalili, you seem a bit deranged and hateful of Asians. You need to get to know people of all races and see the beauty in all. When Take care, y'all!

Anonymous said...

I know, Jalili will hate me for my words. I can hear the anti-Asian rant now.

You rarely see an Asian model who is not half-white. Hollywood favors light skin - hence, Maggie Q, Vanessa Williams, etc. They rarely present a dark Asian or dark black model.

Why can't we have beauty that isn't always based on white standards of beauty? If you only favor one race, are you not any better than the genocidal oppressors? Embrace the beauty of all races.

I can hear the anti-Asian rant from Jalili rushing over to my post like a hurricane.

Top Model Fan said...

April never hated her mother, and never hated being half-Asian. In interviews she said she's very proud of her heritage, and never favored one race over another. And she never badmouthed her mother on the show. I don't know where you're getting that idea from.

As for this current cycle, I was disappointed this season. None of these girls really appealed to me. As for the final three, Aminat was pretty but couldn't take a photo to save her life, Allison was okay but weird, and although Teyona took great photos, her attitude and cockiness were a turn-off.

Teyona's attitude aside, she has been doing well post-ANTM. All her photos on her Elite portfolio are test shots. ANTM photos are crap and her agency is doing a great job of trying to promote her positively.

I wish you'd all get off the "We need to support a sista!" bandwagon and learn to appreciate beauty in all shapes, sizes and colors. I'm not going to root for a contestant who's the same race as I am; I'm going to root for the best contestant period.

We said she didn't want to talk about her mother, but was always ready to talk about her father (Gee, I wonder why)
It was pretty obvious from facial movements, statements, and grimaces how she felt about being chinese. A blind man could see it. She even complained to some of the other girls about being called 'chinese' remember that? Did that look like a women who was 'proud' of her heritage to you???

Taylor-Sara is confusing Anon with Top Model Fan. I have no idea who April is. I have heard black gals comment about their dislike for dark skin color and hair texture. I have heard Asian gals express shame for their eyes and hair. I have heard half-white gals comment about their hate for their non-white side. Self-hatred is nothing new!

Many of these models are self-centered egomaniacs with serious issues, including racial problems!

I agree with Top Model Fan. None of those 3 gals appeal to me. Personally, I find Naomi Campbell to be visually stunning. And Naomi has black and Asian ancestry (white ancestry, too). Only racism would prevent Naomi from gracing many fashion magazines and ads. Naomi even spoke out about the blatant racism in the fashion industry. Naomi is a supermodel of international renown, far above the league of Tyra Banks and her Sports Illustrated stunts.

As Top Model Fan pointed out, not every black model is going to move people. And there are too many white judges in Top Model.

Taylor-Sara, it's called the tragic mulatto syndrome. April sounds like she suffers from self-hatred, but Asians aren't the only ones who hate themselves. Black and Hispanic women can hate themselves just as much as Asian women.

I am concerned about Sara's comment: "The idea that we should put 'other' minority women on par with our problems is sheer lunacy!" Sara, you clearly need to expand your friendship beyond one race. It sounds like you have met a lot of hateful minority women, but your return of venom doesn't rectify things. It only makes you a racist, Sara.

I see beautiful black women with white women, and I find it wonderful. Of course, I have had black friends. It just sounds like you haven't had good friendships with other minority women, Sara.

The white women who are complaining are simply racist and jealous. All 3 of those Top Model photos show attractive women, but Naomi Campbell transcends all of them! Take care!

I'm not confusing anyone Anon. I simply called her by the wrong name. But I really don't see what the convo between me and her has to do with you.
I also am totally unconcerned with your concern about my comment. I don't write to please ppl. I write to enlighten bw! You did notice this was a bw's blog-did you not?

It's amazing to me how the 'world' is always trying to convice bw that they should put everyone else's problems, concerns, desires before their own. Honey that's called the tragic MAMMIE SYNDROME- and Sara is no mammie! What you are attempting to do here is to manipulate me into thinking I have no right to put bw first, and to do so is racist. But see I'm a very hard person to manipulate-so why don't you take your 'concerns' elsewhere...take care now...

To the Anon. fool
It's also called confusion when you use dame in place of name! Learn to spell before you try to cast aspersions fool. It took me all of 2 seconds to delete you. See your 'concerned' self back where the hell you came from.

Why do black women worship white men?

Chill!

Anonymous said...

Anon from June 8 '09 at 11:11, why do White women worship Black men?

Why do Black men worship themselves?

Why do White,Latina, & Asian women think they are above Black women?

Why do White, Latina, & Indian women think their you-kno-what doesn't stink?

Why do Latina women express "Minority solidarity" when it comes to Black men (Meaning they kiss Black men's rear ends) yet show hatred and contempt for Black women?

See, we can ask questions too.

Top model fan, we sistas have the right to support ONLY ourselves weather you like it or not. Don't tell us who to support! Let these other race women take care of their damn selves!

I do not think Tiger Words hates his Black side. He married a Blonde White girl, you cannot show much more Black male behavior than that.

Naomi Campbell has only ever claimed to be Black. The moment she hit the big time, I found it very amusing how alot of Asians, especially Chinese, were trying to claim she was also an Asian supermodel, despite the fact that the link they use (a half-Black, half-Chinese man) who claims to be Naomi's father, has been denied by BOTH Naomi and her mother! Naomi's mom is Black. Naomi is even darker-skinned than her mom. So is her brother. Naomi has even stated that she is Black and not any other race. So please, get of her dick! (Figuratively, I know she doesn't have one). And drop the "she is also white as well", line, there is even less credibility to that comment!!!

And as for the anon who claimed that I only find Black and white models attractive, please show me ONE place in my comment that I referred to any of the white models on the show as attractive. I didn't even call any of the black ones that. The fact that I called out your obvious hypocrisy when it comes to Asians does not make me anti-Asian. It just makes me a truth-teller!

Asian ancestry doesn't mean it was her father although that could be as well. She could have it down the line. Also we claim many people as being just black or they claim to just be black when they have multiracial history.

But I agree with was jalimaster said. The same thing happened to Tiger woods and a Black Korean football player in the U.S. He lived in Korea for a short part of his life and faced hate and ridicule as well as his mom. Now he's a star and they love him etc. but he has mixed feelings on that.

Anonymous said...

Whoc ares about his "Mixed feelings"? does he date Black women? does he even care about Black women? I think we all know the answer to that.

Hon cool down. That was so unecessary. What I was saying is that people in Korea all of a sudden loved him when he became a huge ball player, but wanted nothing to do with him or his mother (do you know how biracial/multiracial children are treated in Korea?). Made their lives there hell. That's the point I had to make. What was your point? And I'm sorry, but I'm not going to not like a guy because of who they may or may not be dating or may or may not marry. We are in an ir board.

Cool, if you want to worry about/like people who would spit on you simply because you are a Black female, be my guest. But don't ask me to do the same. I don't care about him, I don't care about anyone who is not a freind to or supporter of Black women, period. Let someone else worry about mixed kids in Korea who come from BM/KF unions. I will continue to worry about little Black girls and Black women, thank you very much.

It's funny, because people are always trying to say black women are the most racist. Negative!!!
What is also so funny is that people are always something that black people are always playing the race card. Yet, these ww said Teyona won because she was black. WTF, there have been plenty of ww winning ANTM. Heck, the first ANTM was white!!!
Allison was cute, but not model material. There was nothing “fierce" about her.

I know this may some racist, but I wasn't attending it to. I'm glad that a bw won, because we need more black models in the world. The majority of the other models out there a white. The majority of the models that you will see in fashion shows, cover or magazines are white. So I don’t see the in them complaining about it. Boo Hoo, A black girl won ANTM-_-

Even though this is somewhat related, somewhat not related to this post, it made me think of this video I was watching. It's about the lack of black models in the fashion world. The model even mentions how they would say that they only ww for the show, or whatever. How not a lot of agents want black models, unless they are "less ethnic" looking. "A white girl dipped in chocolate," someone said in the video. Some modeling agencies don't even hire black models, they just spray a white girl black.

So have a few bw becoming models over white ones isn't going to hurt any.

here's the video if you or anyone else wants to watch it.
