Hollywood's refusal to show classy, elegant, or beautiful BW!

Classy Deshawn appears to be far to ladylike for H.O.A. and beauties like Leila are often hidden from reg. programming...

Below is an excerpt from Essence re: Deshawn Snow. From real Housewives of Atlanta.

I'm very disturbed by her firing because I really feel that it was image-related. She was poised, attractive, demure and lady-like, and I really feel that this is NOT the image they want of BW! Listen to Deshawn tell a reporter the rationale given to her in regards to her storyline. Doesn't that sound strangely like they were miffed that she refused to get dirty, ghetto, and loud? If I'm wrong or reading too much into it, someone tell me, but this is the impression I am strongly getting. It seems to me that they just could not fathom a classy, attractive non-combative bw. I think image assassination is the biggest culprit to bw having better roles and better lives in and out of Hollywood. Yet Hollywood is a deciding factor in how we are seen, treated, live and interact. It's NOT NOTHING! l know alot of ppl think it's not important but let them ever try to portray ww the way they do us, and watch all hell break loose! Image is EVERYTHING! It' so important that we must constantly fight negative images and be on guard against those who would work against our best interests. What many bp do not understand is that we are one of the few races in the world who is judged by their worst characters, and depictions. This is why when roles are slim for bw and the only bw used is loud, overbearing, argumentative, and severely overweight, it is extremely damaging to ALL bw. I cannot emphasize enough the need to fight Hollywood, and their constant misrepresentations, and take our image back!

Below is the interview with deshawn, and the reporter's comments.....

Deshawn Snow granted an exclusive interview with Essence yesterday after being booted from Bravo’s hit show the Housewives of Atlanta. According to Deshawn, The firing came as a surprise as they had just talked about a new season weeks beforehand. The producers excuse for removing her from the line up was her storyline was “too boring” and she wasn’t as outspoken as they would have liked during the filming of the show.

[One of the producers] called and said that I was “too human for a circus show” and that because the show did so well, they are about to pump up the drama and they didn’t think that I would fit in. He gave me an example, saying that during the reunion when I found out what a few of the other ladies said about me, they were expecting me to say more, but I’m not the type to go “television” and start acting crazy because somebody’s talking about me. I’m fine with the decision. It wasn’t my decision. They let me go and there are no hard feelings.
There are rumors that Tameka Foster will be replacing her in the line up. Sheree Whitfield may get the boot as well now that the truth has revealed that she’s one missed child support payment away from filling out a Wendy’s application.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I was supportive of the show until I found out that half of them bishes were broke. Flaunting around in Cadillacs and Rovers when they should have been driving Hyundais. DeShawn’s storyline was boring, but she was normal and gave some balance to the show. And putting a white woman with a bad weave on the show is not balance. I’m tired of seeing stereotypical loud, gold digging, ignant ass, neck rolling black women on television fronting about what they do and do not have. These are the images that are consistently pushed on television week to week and I’ve had enough!

I'm so glad you made this post. The media is known for supporting negative ideologies and stereotypes of black women which are unfortunately embedded in the minds of others. I found it highly offensive for Bravo to take her off the show for those reasons. When you look at the show and compare the antics of the women from Atlanta to the antics of the women from the other cities, it's not only embarrasing, but its also repulsive. As someone who is from Atlanta, I found they didn't represent very well (on so many levels).

Not only was Bravo wrong for showing "hood rich" women, but they were also wrong for showing women who were rich via their athletic husbands (except for NeNe's husband, but he isn't really wealthy either), which gives off another stereotype that blacks can only achieve wealth via sports, singing, dancing, etc.

Yes BCU,
It reminds me of VH1 refusing to go through with an IR show of several bw competing for 1 wm when they found out the women would be educated and refined!
They had a Co. memo leak to press referring to BW's horrific image in America, and how they wanted to perpetuate it (or something to that effect) The net result was that they wanted to continue as much image assassination as they possibly could, regardless of how much they hurt WOC....

I have been noticing the lack of representation of non ghetto, slutty, loud...etc (we all know the drill) types of black women in the media as well, especially in so-called “black” media. Quite frankly, I find it disgusting. I cannot associate myself with that sick mess. I personally believe that black women need to fight this type of media caricature, because that's exactly what it is. We simply cannot tolerate it anymore. I do agree, it most likely was image related. Its obvious. If anything, I would think that these producers would WANT to push an image of black women that is more like Michelle Obama. The media should be running with that!!!!!!

But I guess this type of mindset is so far gone, it's worthless to expect these types to follow suit. Black women need to start creating their own movies, create their own magazines etc... Forget these clowns. The damage that they have contributed to society is simply overwhelming. There are no more chances left to give them. If they cannot accept a sweet, well-mannered, charming black woman then obviously their thought process is screwed tight & shut. They're the ones at fault.

I totally agree with you Sarah. I don't know if you've watched the movie called "The Women" with Eva Mendes. As usual, the only black woman of all the women played by Jada Pinkett Smith, was loud, ghetto, masculine...

Also ladies whenever you see bw being used like pawns (loud, vulgar, deliberately overweight with serious attitudes etc. DO NOT WATCH! Don't give your money to ppl who are insulting you!!!! I awoke the other night to hear the TV on. There was an infomercial on about getting a car. I don't know if any of you have seen it, but it was disgusting! It was called something -in 5. It was set up like a comedy club and full of bp. A bm host was on stage telling these bp about how they could still get a car even though he knew all of them had bad credit (WTH) One bm stands up and tells him that he's had drug charges, been in jail and therefore cannot get a car. The laughing coon assures him that he can, explaining that with this program even a convict like him can get a car.(no, he didn't use that word, but it was strongly implied) But the next one was so insulting, I turned before I started to scream. Another bm stands up saying that HE HAS 4 BABYMOMMAS, AND OWES CHILD SUPPORT EVERYWHERE!!! He said babymommas were calling him all day long, and he could not afford a car. The audience laughed like trained fools!!! Since when is a man having 4 babymommas cute and funny??? Since when are bm stupid enough to get up and declare proudly tht they are drug dealers??? I could not believe these ppl were too stupid to see that they were convertly being called low class animals, and they were participating in their own character assassination!!! It was unbelievable!!! With everyone giggling like stupid idiots. They simply put a bm on stage, and you fools can't see it's still a caricature!!!

Sara, you actually had a valid point until you once again attempted to demean the humanity of overweight black women.

How can you possibly expect to get the respect you feel you deserve when you so willingly throw other black women under the bus? You can't combat bigotry with more bigotry...

...especially since Deshawn is overweight and deemed "classy" by you, and Sheree is nasty and thin. Do you enjoy stereotyping fat black women, because you become fat by association?

Your superficial ideas on who to like and not like is lost on me. Nene, is perceived as 'ghetto' by most, but she has the heart of someone who is real and beautiful and all that eliminates any negatives that can be attributed to her. So ghetto or not, Nene is fabulous, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next season!

Taylor-Sara said...

Anon, I am NOT demeaning anyone! In Norbit, the woman was deliberately overweight! She was made to look super fat and gross. (she was not real-the character was made using Eddie M. )In big momma, same thing. It was man dressed as a DELIBERATELY overweight made up woman! I am not demeaning overweight ppl. I know exactly what it's like to struggle with weight problems. But have a person with a weight problem is one thing, deliberately making them grossly overweight for the purpose of laughing at them is something else!

It does not eliminate a thing!!! She might have a good heart but so what, I have a good heart too. does that negate some of my other bad traits? NO! what if I had a good heart, but I constantly lied? What if I had a good heart but I’m an adultery (like our beloved Martin luther king)?; what if I had a good heart, but I have anger issues and therefore act a fool sometimes? My point? having a good heart does not negate a dang thing!!!!

There is nothing wrong with calling ghetto GHETTO, cause that’s what it is. If it wasn’t a bad thing, it wouldn’t have the connotation that it has, or would it?? Just because it might be funny or entertaining, doesn’t make it alright. I for one do NOT aspire to be ‘ghetto’, I do not want my future children to be ghetto, nor do I associate with ghetto folks, period ! color be dang!!!! I have to say I am up to neck level with people constantly excusing ghetto-ness and acting like there’s nothing wrong with it. There’s a lot wrong with it, it signifies a lack of home training, it signifies being uneducated, it signifies being low class and sadly right now (with the help of Nene), it signifies blackness. So good heart or no, Nene is ghetto, and that is not a good thing! And I hate that people are encouraging her in her ghetto-ness, as if she should be proud of herself. Meanwhile, a lady like deshawn is constantly being described as boring and ‘fake’, wt-!!! Black folks, can we make an effort to find our right minds?

as a person, I’m always striving for self-improvement. There is nothing wrong with being classy, there’s nothing wrong with NOT being loud, there’s nothing wrong with respecting other people’s space. I am so tired of black people that do not enjoy or condone ghetto behavior being seen as boogie, wt-!!! I personally want to live my life without constantly seeing women that look like me being the butt of the media’s jokes. I’m sure trailer trash white women are funny too (just watch cmt’s redneck series) but where are they, where do you see them? Hardly anywhere, that’s what. I’m sure all the ladies who visit Sara’s blog know that it is not by coincidence that trailer trash white women are invisible. So excuse me (and others) for not finding the ghetto-rization of black women to be funny (or acceptable).

Sorry folks, I just could not take it anymore.

I do too Lena. When I see bw on tv neck rolling, and "ooo G-u-r-l!! " it makes me want to scream! I hate it! And let me say for the record ladies, I go in many corporate offices (due to my work) and I NEVER see ghetto types in them! All the bw I encounter in these offices are demure, well groomed, attractive, and well spoken. It's so imperative for us to fight these images. These images hurt us everyday in ways we see, and ways we don't see. Stop watching shows like Jerry Springer, and Maury (who always has bw begging their baby daddies to help them raise these po lil chilren. While simutaneously showing ww who admit to cheating on their spouse/sig oth. being cried over by white and blk men! Yall know what I'm talking about. The ww will openly admit it may not be his baby, and he blk or white will be crying over her, and praying it's his. Then if it is, he'll jump up and down, and hug and kiss her, and act as if she didn't just openly admit she cheated on him on Nat'l TV!!! Meanwhile the blk baby momma's are left to fend for themselves....

[Disclaimer: All Caps used solely for emphasis]

It's clear that Hollywood has NO problem PROMOTING IMAGES THAT DEMEAN, DEGRADE, AND MISREPRESENT BW. I feel strongly that the time has come for BW TO DESTROY RACIST ANTI-BW IMAGES (BASED ON LIES, MYTHS, AND STEREOTYPES)AND PUNISH ANTI-BW HATERS. For too long, BW are/have been paying a HIGH PRICE IN OUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIVES BECAUSE OF THEM.

BW who are in the position to do so should hire PR firms (as well as pro-BW producers, casting agents, directors, screen writers, etc.) to focus SOLELY ON PROMOTING AN AUTHENTIC, POSITIVE, NON-RACIST, IMAGE OF BW AT EVERY LEVEL OF THE MEDIA WORLD (eg. films, TV, print,etc.).

BW should also take strong LEGAL (and other) MEASURES (anti-defamation/civil rights lawsuits, boycotts, political protests, etc.) TO PUNISH ANTI-BW HATERS. ANTI-BW HATERS should be put on notice that there will be A HEAVY PRICE TO PAY FOR ATTACKING THE HUMANITY, DIGNITY, AND FEMININITY OF BW.

And to add further insult to injury, as reported on Pinky's blog, apparently Sheri Shepherd of The View is developing a comedy show to be on Lifetime network based on her own life - i.e., about a woman who finds out her husband is cheating on her with another woman, the other woman bears his child, she (Sheri) forgives the husband, and has the husband, the other woman and the other woman's child move in. And they all presumably live happily ever after as one big happy family! This story line makes me want to hold my nose. Sheri seems to have no self-esteem or self-respect. Why on earth would she want to bring such a show to television? The images she is creating with this show demeans black women (her character and the other woman). And doesn't exactly show black men in a good light either. And perpetuates the stereotype regarding black kids born into and growing up in crazy, unstable family environments.

I am wondering whether there is something we can do about this. Maybe start an email/phone campaign to Lifetime against this show. I know if a black male comedian were the person behind this show, we would not stand for it. I'm all for Sheri expanding her horizons since I suspect she does not have a long future on The View, but selling out herself and black women in the process with a show like this is NOT the answer. Ladies, we have to do something to express our outrage to Lifetime about this show. I hope this show NEVER sees the light of day.

The reason 'Hollywood' does not want to show WOC with class, style and grace is because all of the above are about personal responsibility. Having it, taking it and walking the talk - day in and day out. Society has gotten away from demanding that from people and people rarely if ever demand it of themselves or others.

This link below is to an item on Rhianna and Chris Brown written by a white male and it really hits home the point about personal responsibility.

What REALLY upsets me is that SO many of the powers-that-be in Hollywood are...JEWISH MEN!!! Men who have traditionally been known to date AND marry BW in record numbers. I've ALWAYS gotten hit on by Jewish men, so I just don't get why they can't support the BW that they seem to love so much.

I guess the color that rules in Hollywood isn't white, yellow, or brown, it's GREEN.

Society DOES NOT want to see BW portrayed as beautiful, smart, and classy, so since it's believed that showing BW as beauties will somehow be rejected by mainstream America, we're not getting a fair shake adn we're being rejected. WHATEVER!! COWARDS rule Hollywood!!

Taylor-Sara said...

If anyone has the email to lifetime, please post it so that we can write and tell them how we feel about this disgusting new show! We really need a black woman's network that works to eliminate this type of garbage-as well as fight for better images, and the betterment of bw the world over....

Hmmm..

Actually, I think Sherri Shepherd is like a lot of black women I've met.

They use men to validate their sense of self-worth and have slogged through many sexual liasons that were unsatisfactory and ended up having unwanted babies.

Although in Sherri's case she was a married woman. Most black women are unmarried with kids.

Most black women put away their standards to have a man, any man in their lives. And when they are in the presence of black women who know their worth, they can't help but pummel them down. These women have no problem invalidating the worth of other black women, because they themselves feel unworthy.

Most black women, like Sherri, are church-bound and are taught to forgive any and everything, even chronic infidelity. And would even mammy the the product of the infidelity so they can feel they are good people.

So, I don't understand your point. Why shouldn't a show like Sherri's be brought to life? It's actually the truth of what most black women are like and experience.

Deshwawn was the most uneducated of the bunch. On top of that, she had no common sense, which she constantly demonstrated during her fundraiser. Just because someone is soft-spoken, it doesn't mean they are smart and ladylike, and all of the things you are attributing to 'soft-spoken people.'

I also find it very ironic that some of the responses here sound more "ghetto"
than anything Nene, might say.

Are we expected to just smile and be happy while (due to the likes of sherri’s slow self) there are more stereotypes being created for us. I am beyond tired of women like sherri, I am tired of being associated with them.

I don't know (or care) about your motivation in saying that, but surely you don't really believe that?....OR you need some different company!!!!

Personally, I know TONS of really smart beautiful bw...some in relationships etc, some not. What I don't know is any woman like The SS Sherri Shepherd, because only a fool would allow herself to be used like that. She cannot control what her husband does, but she can control her reaction to his actions, and the first thing she should do is DROP HIM, because he does not value her as 1) his wife and partner or 2) a woman...and who knows what kind of diseases he may have exposed her to...clearly he was not "covered" up while he committed his marital infidelities..I bet he is probably jealous of her, and thought he would show her who the man was....

Anyway...SS is in my opinion, not entirely reflective of many BW women in general.

Maybe you should expand your circles Anon....that is said with the best of intentions. Since I don't know you, AND I am a peaceful person, please know I am not trying to offend you...If I ever feel that need, I will not do that here in Sara's living room.

I plan to. Expect to see a feature film from me one day. Hopefully not too long away.lol

http://www.throughtheglassmovie.com/

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I seriously want to. I just like the fact that Nollywood movie star Stephanie Okereke went to film school at NYFA graduated and after made her own movie where she cast herself and the lead and love interest. So that proves when you do it yourself you can do what you want.

I've been watching her movies and she's great. Genevieve Nnaji is also a great actress. These are the types of actresses I would love to see in the U. S. as well as actresses like Nadia Buari. That way we rep. all types of black women.

That is exactly what we need; our own female movie makers, our own mags (not essense and ebony) which are both male dominated. But magazines made by bw for bw! We certaninly cannot expect any image rectification from bm since so many of them are the cause of it's demise in the first place. So we need our own network of ppl to come in and form our own image ameilioration.

I've been looking into this as well. Because we seriously need something better than Essense or Ebony. What's even worse are these black hair magazines that have people that aren't even black people in the mags.

I guess the color that rules in Hollywood isn't white, yellow, or brown, it's GREEN.

Well yes it's a business. Supply and demand if we keep demanding it or acting like we demand it they are going to keep making it. BW need to stop taking parts that demean them. We also have to stop watching movies and shows that show us in this light.

Yes Nollywood's women characters can at times annoy me. But you have women filmmakers like Stephanie who are working to make better roles for bw. Also you have actresses like Genny and Steph (yeah they had to take a bunch of roles they didn't care to this point)who are being picky about the roles they are taking.

Seriously though I think bp should check out Nollywood, Kanywood and other African movie industries because we frankly have no reason for not having one by now. Especially look about Nollywood and Gollywood (Ghanian movie industry) Yeah there are some stinkers, but the point is they make those movies on meager budgets and bp in the U. S. are complaining about how hard it is to make a film in the digital filmmaking world. Not only that, but we also need to check out industries like Kollywood (Nepal) Kollywood (Tamil)(I don't know about the newer movies)but many of the old ones were shot on 16mm film and shot on the cheap or course Bollywood and other film industries.

But anyway check search these industries on Youtube.

Sorry this is getting kind of long winded.

Yeah the movies can go crazy and everywhere, but you have ones that are more linear

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7UZDwSx96o

Nepali films can be crazy as hell. But are good fun. Don't know what they are saying, but from what's happening in the movies I'm getting a gist.

But it's just to prove that we could make movies on low budgets. Also that there are great black actresses that we seriously need to see on the screen.

If I could deprogram bw from thinking they're the sh*t, I would do it in a moment, and spare millions of women alot of pain. They are NOT the sh*t. They are just ordinary men with overinflated reputations. Ladies for you own sake, and that of your children past and present. Look for the BEST man, and forget about his color. That's a non issue. What matters is for you to have good husbands, and fathers for your babies. But unfortunately, your chances of finding those men are much greater if you look OUTSIDE of the blk community. We have been seeing stereotypical portrayal of BW in the media for decades, how has that ever been "effective"? Why would Sherri make any difference? Plus, I don't understand how you concluded Sherri represented MOST BW? The reality of the situation is that millions of black LADIES aren't being represented. If we're gonna show reality, let's show the whole reality. What about the BW who have degrees, travels, speak different languages fluently, own their homes and businesses? Most BW I know have their stuff together, are single, with NO KIDS (pretty much like Kenya from "Something New", before meeting her man). And what about those who are married to or dating good, committed, monogamous men? It is sad that so many non black people seem to believe that Michelle Obama is an "exception". I admire and look up to her, don't get me wrong, but my friends are smart, educated, classy ladies, and so am I. Why can't women like Michelle represent a reality that a lot of people try so hard to hide, instead of women like Sherri?

Anonymous said...

BTW, you said in a "non-stereotypical manner" but the whole concept is stereotypical. Desperate, all about BM, no self-respect whatsoever. I don't feel represented. Millions of us aren't like that.

Sherri's tv show idea is fracking stupid. I'd never forgive my husband if he did that(hypothetically speaking because I'm single for now). I find that kind of show idea to be idiotic and unfair to decent and classy bw. I also plan becoming a filmmaker myself. I'm more of a fantasy fan and I don't care for Romance or Drama at all I also love action adventure and sci fi movies those are awesome. I wish Black actresses were love interests in those movies and not just crappy movies like "The First Sunday" I hate movies like those. Now I know why black movies fail it's because they deal with the same tired topics.

Hell yeah fantasy and scifi are the bomb. I watched the whole first season of Blakes' 7 and some of the later with the black woman Dayna on there and wished the she would have been a love interest for one of the two leads, even though that second lead might have been a bit of a pscyho he was a cute and elegant one (lol) Wow the 70's and 80's were men looked like men and not little boys even though they needed help with some of that fashion sense.lol Anyways I wish we had more movies like Strange Days were it was a bw that is the love interest.

I watched the original Survivors (Terry Nation) and it was cool. I wish that the BBC would have thrown in a bwwm romance.
There was also a tv movie in the U. S. called Where Have All the People Gone that is similar and would have made a great series.

I also plan to be a filmmaker. Right now I am in Production One at Austin Film Works.

Knowing women and girls at school/work who had the "friends with benifits" or living together etc. Another friend had what she calls an f* buddy on and off for a few years and didn't understand why they never went anywhere. The drama they went through on the daily was insane. I chose to mos definately not go that route. Plus I hung out with more boys than girls in high school and believe me they didn't have nice things to say about girls who did such things. Now some are talking out their ass, but when you just let people talk what they are really thinking come out. I new for sure I wouldn't want to be talked about in the way these guys were talking about the girls who gave it up easy.

It is so sad and disheartening to see some Black women thinking that in order to be "Accepted" by whoever it is they have in mind, that they will get there by trashing other Black women as "Ghetto", "loud", "Uneducated", etc.

Let me tell you something ladies, we as Black women are UNDER ATTACK FROM ALL SIDES, and what we need to do is is forget this class, who is being "Ladylike" and "Quiet" mess and UNITE. We Black women control an enormous ammount of wealth, and we could do some real damage to both Black Hollywood, and regular Hollywood (Since NEITHER one of them do right by us!)with our purse strings!

The way we fight back is by UNITING, not tearing down our poor, urban sisters.

I'm a 31 y/o white chick (120 lbs @ 5'5" for those concerned). I recently started dating a black guy and it is AWESOME. He treats me better than I've ever been treated before. He understands when you take care of a woman, she'll take care of you. The way his skin looks and feels drives me crazy. He's not jealous or possessive, but protective and trusting. The sex is hot. He treats all my friends well, males and females. He is such a gentleman and anticipates my needs. If we're out and he sees I'm getting tired, that man has the car pulled around before I even have to say I'm ready to go. These aren't race-specific attributes. Any man can do these sort of things. And no man is perfect...they're still men! After years of dating all sorts of men- Indian men, Eastern European men, white American men, I have only felt truly worshiped by my black man. I can't get enough of him. The white guys I've been with, on the whole, just seem to take women for granted and forgot the little courtesies that make a women feel cared for and loved. They expect it to be all about them from Day One. Then they don't even call the next day. Your mileage may vary.

@Queen My take on this. Although yes there are not many reps of respectful black women, haev you noticed the whites lately? HWofNJ had about 3 major blowouts. MTV is full of whites spitting, hitting and cursing at eachother (Jersey Shore and 16 and Preg) and of course our hollywood stars are always doing scandalous things.
