UNBELIEVABLE --- BET reaches an all time low!!!

Jaime Foxx starts off the evening insulting MJ fans, and insisting on calling Michael a black man -"He belonged to us!-and we shared him with the world!" he bellowed.

Any fool knows that's not true! Michael loved all people of all colors, and truly he belonged to the world-not just us....

Well BET does it again. It adeptly brings us to a new all time low, and just when you think the network just can't get anymore sleazy. My hat is off, Debra Lee, and her cohorts managed to pull it off. I'm referring of course to the so-called Michael Jackson tribute, that wasn't. In fact, Michael was barely mentioned. But what was highlighted, and presented to America, was a foul, gyrating, lyrical nonsense 'performance' passing as musical entertainment. It was then topped off in it's debauchery with a heaping dose of child porn. If you saw the show, then you saw Lil Wayne and his cohorts rapping to some God-forsaken garbage 'about f(*&^%) every girl in the world! This coonified, brain dead, little amoral puppet came out swaying, and grinning like a modern day minstrel show, while he brought black ppl to the bottom of the cesspool where he and his friends, no-doubt, live. While he rapped out this lyrical feces, out come 4 cute little (9-12) year old black girls. At this point, I'm shocked, thinking they are going to stop this nonsense, but no. Ppl kept bobbing and dancing in place while these little girls gathered around to be exploited. And it gets worse, as the lyrics went into rather graphic detail, and had to be bleeped out, I watched as one of Lil Wayne's damaged sidekicks began to chant how he loved to get the 'Spanish girls to 'scream "Oh Papi" as he stuck his d(*&) in. At this point I was so shaken and mortified, I had to leave the room. I'm going to try to post this video for those of you who think I'm exaggerating.... How long are bp going to actively participate in their own demise. Not one adult in that audience stood up and spoke up for those little girls. Truly, most of our enemies seem to be internal.... The only way to describe BET, and the amoral pygmies that run it-is HOT GHETTO MESS...

Don't bother writing letters BET does not care-don't you realize that yet? The only way to deal with these life-lacerating maggots is to get them off the air!

Go to what about our daughters-both videos are there (scroll down to see little girls)

The open letter sent to Clutch magazine -below-

FICTIONAL character.

Dear Debra Lee,
I’m Janita Patrick, a 15-year-old African-American female from Cincinnati. Recently, I watched the 2009 BET Awards and felt the strongest urge to reach out to the program. My family is of the typical middle-class variety; both parents and four brothers. See, I’m a junior in high school (got skipped), so naturally EVERYBODY in my age group watches BET. I’m used to seeing the sagging pants, tattoos, lack of emphasis on reading and respecting women that makes up your videos. People in my class live this out everyday, while teachers tell us that we’re acting just like the people in your shows.
In your shows. That struck me as odd, because I would think that with your show being the primary outlet for black entertainers and musicians, and considering the context of blacks in this country, there’s a social responsibility factor to consider. I would never blame BET alone for the way a great deal of my classmates act and talk and dress. Everybody makes their own choices. However, if anybody is aware of the power of television on impressionable minds, it’s the people running the television operations. If you are not aware, then perhaps you shouldn’t be running the operations.
Guess who watches your network the most? Not those who are intelligent enough to discern foolishness from substance, but those who are barely teenagers, impressionable and believing. It’s awfully cruel to plant seeds of ignorance in fertile minds. You know it’s really bad when the co-founder of BET, Sheila Johnson, said that she “really doesn’t watch it” anymore.
I am constantly fighting against the images and messages put forth on your program. What made you think that it’s okay to bring my classmates on stage to dance behind Lil Wayne and Drake to a song talking about boffing “every girl in the world”? Why does reality train wrecks have to be thrown in our faces? Are you aware of the achievement gap going in inner-city African-American communities? A report from America’s Promise Alliance, a non-profit group started by Colin Powell, recently stated that 47 percent of high school students in the nation’s top 50 cities don’t graduate. This isn’t because of BET per se, but I don’t see any episodes on your show doing anything to counteract this disturbing trend. In fact, your show is a part of this cycle of media depicting us at our worst.
My older brother told me something about profit being the number one goal for every business. I’m not sure I understand what that means, but I do know that your shows have to be entertaining enough to generate viewers, which is how you make your money. But surely our culture is rich enough to entertain without anything extra to “boost” ratings; why the over-the-top foolery? I listen to classmates talk about Baldwin Hills like it’s the Manhattan Project. It doesn’t take much effort to produce a throng of degenerative reality shows, nor does it take much to eliminate socially conscious shows off the air. MTV isn’t much better, but since when does two wrongs ever make a right? It’s one thing for white television shows to depict us in a particular way, but for black television shows to do it is just baffling.
Why do you hate us?
All of the values that my parents seek to instill in me and my brothers seems to be contradicted by a more powerful force from the media, and your show is at the forefront. Your network is the only network that features rap videos and shows exclusively to children of my color. I know that you have no control over the music that the artists put out, but you do have influence as to how you air these videos. I’m sure if a stand was taken to use the talent in your organization to actually crank out thought-provoking entertaining shows and videos, then artists will follow suit. Being that they need you as much as you need them.
There was one awkward segment in the BET Awards when Jamie Foxx singled out three black doctors-turned-authors, but the introduction was so powerless that many of the viewers had no idea who they were. Had they been introduced as Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt and George Jenkins, three brothers who overcame major obstacles to become a success without the use of lyrics that berate women, the sell of substance that destroy communities or through raps about loose gunplay, then maybe my classmates would have come to school talking about more than Beyonce, T-Pain’s BIG ASS CHAIN and Soulja Boy Tell Em’s hopping out the bed.
But they weren’t introduced like that. It seemed like a throwaway obligatory tribute to appease some irritated fans. It missed the mark. Big time. Ask Michelle Obama if she watches BET or encourages Sasha and Malia to do so. Ask President Obama. It’s a reason he is the leader of the free world, and it isn’t because of Buffoonery Exists Today.
You’d be surprised how smart young black children can be with the absence of Blacks Embarrassing Themselves. If your goal is to deter engaged, forward-thinking articulate black minds, then consider your goal fulfilled. It’s hard-pressed to think that your shows are working to promote cultural betterment. However, it’s quite easy to conclude that the destruction of black children through the glorification of immoral behavior and rushed production is by design. Poison is being swallowed by every viewer who adores your network, and the worse thing is, these viewers - my classmates - are not even aware what they’re swallowing.
There is nothing edifying for black women on your show. I don’t judge people who do throng to your programs though; I mean, if a jet crashes in right in front of me, I’ll watch it too. That’s why I don’t flip by your channel…I don’t even want to be sucked in.
I have aspirations of acquiring a law degree and possibly entering the public sphere, so I can counteract conditions in my community perpetuated by the images on your channel. So I should thank you, because in a weird sense, your shoddy programming is the wind behind my back. And it is my hope that I can accomplish my dreams despite BET’s pictorial messages, because Lord knows it won’t be because of them.
Sincerely,Janita Patrick
Janita Patrick is a fictional character. Luckily for Janita, her heartfelt and articulate letter is a result from a lack of BET. Too many others aren’t as lucky.

I stopped watching BET years ago. Thankfully my brothers don't watch it either, praise God.

I heard about the Lil' Wayne and Drake performance and even still I won't watch it. They're not going to get any viewership from me, no matter the media source outlet.

I also heard about their crap tribute to MJ. To be honest, I didn't expect better from them. They seem to get worse every year.

Any time someone mentions BET to me, I tell them straight up, "I don't watch that crap".

I like how the person use the acronym for BET (Blacks Embrassing Themselves), Ima start using that.

So did I sky, I just posted because Gina has been working so hard to get bp to stop watching that garbage completely. I felt compelled to join her. I will say one thing though, if that had been four little white girls on that stage, there would have been hell to pay! Even when Lil wayne mentioned the cyrus girl, he had the sense not to even go 'there'. lest he be dealt with, by ppl who would not hesitate to take him down...

Okay I'm going to say it. BET is for trash. Plain and simple. The White version would be Podunk Racist TV, and most White people wouldn't look at it. Somehow whenever the word Black is thrown out there, too many of "us" assume it'll be something worth watching. We see other people of color and assume it'll be worth listening to. Not so. Those people (like Jamie Foxx) are called sell outs. Not in the typical sense of the saying, but in the sense that they would sell ever living creature down the river for a buck in their pocket and a vagina on their lips. They're filthy disgusting human beings, and real BP should never, ever support them.
Rant ended.

I think this is just a microcosm of what has become of AA culture. BET is just a visible "lightening rod" bc they put it all out on front street and get a profit from it.

I only watched BET to catch some episodes of The Game. It has nothing for me. I saw the "performance" on t.v. If these people don't have the sense to be embarrassed for themselves, why shuodl I spend time being embarassed for them?

BET is garbage, however we can't diminish the fact that from the 60's through his 'Thriller' phenomenon, Michael did represent a black man to the majority of white America who probably never knew or was too scared to approach a black person in real life.

Before Michael NO BLACK ARTISTS were being played on MTV. Not Stevie Wonder, not Smokey Robinson, not Diana Ross, or Lionel Richie. He Broke done those barriers through being appealing to everyone. His talent was undeniable, But race still mattered and Micheal broke down those barriers.

Yes Mike had issues with his color, but I always remember how Mike had black people in his videos, such as in remember the time; which was the first time Black people were portrayed as Egyptians on TV. That was a huge slap in the face to the Status Quo.

I think America has a problem seeing a successful black person as a product of a black environment. Almost that fact that they are intelligent, powerful, and hard-workers is the exception for black people. But let something negative happen like a murder or robbery, THEN ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE CRIMINALS AND THIEVES, ETC. Oprah, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Maya Angelou came from humble beginnings IN the black community; however the mainstream sees them as more than black. They have to be able to transcend color so to speak. My question is why do black people have to transcend their 'blackness' to be successful, but white people can be successful and still keep their 'whiteness'?

I don't see why they can't be positive BLACK ROLE MODELS, instead of having to leave their color and their community in the dust.

I think one of the worst things Rob J could have done was sell BET. He was going to get a guy who is a tv programmer or something like that before this but I guess nothing came to it. I think he went on to create TV 1 ( I haven't seen much of TV 1, because we don't have it in Austin. But I will say that why would you sell to a company like Viacom people who have blanded the hell out of cable (killing the promise that cable tv showed in it's programming)a group of people that are nearly hoochiefying children's tv channels over a man who was a programmer for channels like Discovery.

I think he sold the channel so he could say he was a black billionaire. He then went to buy and airline and guess what they didn't want to sell to him. What I also don't get is why he didn't just merge with MBC/The Black Family Channel, because they could have made a great channel together (before the sell) But I do have to admire Evander and the others let that channel die rather than turn it into the cesspool that is BET

I agree about BET being a sewer if it was a good network it was probably a once upon a time period that I probably didn't remember or was too young to remember.

I find a lot of the music from BET to be disgusting. That mess even plays on the radio.
I find it more tragic when so called black entertainment perpetuates the very stereotypes a lot of black people from a previous era were trying to refute!

I've vowed to never become the stereotypical loud and fat ghetto woman. My personality is far from confrontational I'm actually timid and I avoid confrontation whenever I can.

That's what's sad. We lost MBC, Nu TV. I think he just didn't like the thought of competition. He knows the only reason most black people even watch BET is because it's the only national channel geared toward black people. Nu and MBC were mostly targeted to older viewers and families. Boy we can be our own worst enemies.

I didn't watch the tribute, knowing BET stands for Blacks Embarrassing Themselves. After reading the few things I've read, I'm so glad I didn't waste my time.

Someone mentionned The Game...was it finally cancelled? I watched some episodes on Youtube, but it was so stereotypical and the racial jokes, GOSH! Between Malik's mother with the loud ghetto attitude, Melanie desperate for Derwin who got ANOTHER black woman pregnant (your typical baby mama drama), Malik being the stereotypical LOSER in saggy pants that can't speak motherf**king ENGLISH, I was praying for this show to disappear.

What is losing blackness and keeping whiteness? What makes Oprah less black? What makes Celine Dion "still white"? The Obamas lost their blackness now that they're international? I guess MLK lost his blackness? Mother Theresa lost her whiteness (or maybe she can't lose it cause she's white?)...and Ghandi lost his indian-ness? Whatever that is supposed to mean? Do you realize that REGARDLESS OF THEIR RACE, these people transcended race and belong to the world, INCLUDING WHITE Mother Theresa who devoted her life to indians mainly (and not "her white community", so maybe she had really lost her "whiteness" for "leaving them in the dust")?

Sorry I don't get it. And being a certain race doesn't mean you "belong" to that race. What's next? Americans "belong" to america and can't decide to live in Italy otherwise they lose their "american-ness"??? A man "belongs" to men and if he defends women's rights he loses his "manliness"? Damn, Barack lost it I guess?

Why do you see transcending race as "leaving yours in the dust"? The highest level of consciousness is seeing beyond race, faith, gender, status, culture, and see a human we can relate to FIRST.

Long post, but anyway, bottomline, as Sara said, Mike belongs to the world. The WORLD made him the biggest artist in history, the WORLD mourned his death. He is a black man and always will be, but he belongs to the world!

I live in a major city and I was out tonight and I saw about 7 or 8 bf/non-black males couples out tonight holding hands, arm-in-arm looking all happy. It is about damn time that sisters stopped spinning around in circles!!! I saw more of them than the opposite. Not that I am keeping score, but I was shocked. My brother was with me and he said "brothers arent stepping up so I dont blame these women"

Oh my God I just read Janita's letter and realized she defines BET just like I do, Blacks Embarrassing Themselves. She reminds me of myself as a teen, I was a rebel, I wanted to change the world. Unfortunately, she's not aware that Viacom owns BET, Sheila is just a puppet, and all of this is done purposely. Is it's a small percentage who runs the world and divides to conquer. I won't say much more than this, but it's not gonna get any better. It will not. I hear people trying to redefine, excuse and rationalize things that are UNACCEPTABLE. Too many minds are lost, this is sad but true. This is why black women need to stop trying to "save" these brainwashed ABCs. VET them, and if they're eff'd up, FORGET them.

MissZ87 said...

@lola...Your right you don't get it and it makes no sense for me to explain it to you

Lena said...

Blacks Embarrassing themselves is an appropriate acronym for this minstrel show disguised as black entertainment. I don't watch anything labeled black or white entertainment.

If I like a show or movie I like it there is nothing more to it.

I find it offensive when people try to define entertainment according to race.

I think the best way to broaden one's horizons is to see people as human beings first and foremost.

That is why I sometimes watch foreign cinema.
Problem is most foreign cinema doesn't reach the states.

If the foreign film is live action I watch the movie with subtitles I think dubbing only works for animation. Live Actions dubs look cheesy and fake!

My impression of Michael Jackson is that he just wanted to be free to simply be a person, and in his mind (and in the minds of many, whether they realize it or acknowledge it) to be a person in America means being white. Whites are pretty much free to think and do as they please, to be individualistic -- which sometimes includes, ironically enough, co-opting elements of other peoples cultures. Being a Person of Color comes with a whole bunch of rules, regulations and by-laws, which are frequently enforced, not by whites but by PoC. Don't talk this way, don't dress that way, don't eat certain foods, don't listen to certain types of music, Only date men of a certain complexion, etc, etc.

White people have much more freedom, they can be individuals. Kinda makes me laugh how black people are claiming Michael more than ever now, when he was alive millions of them were quick to call him a sellout (that was way before his skin color changed). "Pop" is not "black music", they said.

They were quick to call Janet an acting white sellout because of the way she spoke and carried herself. The last straw was having Rene Elizondo has her "friend" (secret husband). It seems to me that Janet - sorry to say this - is suffering from the "trying to take back my black card" syndrome. Ever since she started dating Jermaine Dupri, her music has been retarded lyrically and most of her productions are garbage (and how you're gonna work with that rapper KHIA of all people??), she said in her interview with Tyra Banks that one of her nicknames is "bitch", she was in a Tyler Perry movie (I admit that 'her' role was decent, I watched the movie online because she was in it, but the overall story was your average "black women being selfish/making poor choices" TP story). Janet isn't the Janet she used to be and some of it has to do with the fact that she lets Jermaine influence her.

Thank you!!! My grandma, who died 7 years ago, predicted that the first Black president would be "half-somethin else or another." The fact is, a large number of white folks love to "transcend" race in order to respect someone who isn't white. That's why they love that "colorblind" speak.

My mama always presented MJ to me as a Black man, regardless of all of his changes. Perhaps that's because she first saw them at the Regal in Chicago with other local groups like the Five Stairsteps before they became "mainstream."

Lena said...

I believe in colorblind as in judging people by their merits. I still see Michael Jackson as black despite singing so called white music. As far as I'm concerned he made pop music cool! Black people have shaped US culture more than whites and other races give black people credit for.

The temptations a group of black male performers they were adored by whites and blacks alike. Those five guys had talent and they were far superior to Elvis Presley!

I admit Elvis Presley was attractive in his younger days. I saw Elvis in old videos of his live performances on youtube so that is how I know what he looks like.

Author's note: I'm an 80's baby that was exposed to this music via sitting in the car with my dad as a child. My dad would frequent the oldies stations and occasionally listen to contemporary music.

Lola said...

Unbelievable. Two women complaining about "colorblind speak" on an INTERRACIAL website promoting colorblindness, where black women want to date all men, including white men. How are you going to do so without transcending race? That doesn't mean forgetting who you are, but that means looking beyond skin differences. You're no different from the racist folks you complain about if you can't look beyond "whiteness/blackness".

Michael was MORE than his race, MORE than his status, MORE than his gender, MORE than his nationality. He was a phenomenal and brilliant soul, who impacted the world with his light, regardless of what some evil people (a minority, again, it's a minority of people running things) did to destroy him. Even Bob Marley, who was proud to be black, was FOR universal unity. One of his famous quotes "Me only have one ambition, you know. I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see mankind live together.. black, white, chinese, everyone.. that's all.". He didn't forget his history and who he was, but HE transcended race, cause he knew that a human being was much more than just that. This guy has people singing his music TO THIS DAY in Pakistan and New Zealand. Folks in Japan trying to sing like him. These men's fans know they're black, but they're more than JUST that. They were and still are lights to the world, their messages are eternal, they broke barriers, and they definitely belong to the world.

This talk is nonsensical to me, but yall keep on talking.

I agree with you Lola. I find the notion that colorblindness means rejecting your heritage to be absurd and ridiculous!
I frequent this blog because I do find men of other races attractive and I find the notion that black women have to hold it down to be not only sexist and unfair but also unrealistic because Black men are given permission to walk out on the struggle while it's demanded of black women to hold it down.
Forget that foolishness!

I don't believe in the struggle sounds like the slave mentality in a new package.

I wanted to grow up and become as good an actor as Sidney Poitier. I wanted to sing like Pocahontas and all the other Disney movie girls. I wanted to dance like Janet Jackson. Thank God I grew up in the 90s before talent went totally down the drain.

To this day, I thank God my parents instilled in me that I don't have to be part of the "black culture" and "act black" because they knew that wasn't our culture. To the person who asked if the game has been canceled, yes it has. One of the episodes that I watched was the one where Melanie finds out that Derwin cheated on her. I cringed so hard when she went up to the woman he cheated with and said, "I know you don't owe me anything, but damn. I am another black woman." What the hell does that even mean?! It just reinforces the thought that just because someone is the same race as you, they somehow owe you something.

Then the scene continues and the woman responds, "Barely." And Melanie goes, "Oh, don't let the Bougie look fool you." And she goes to fight the woman. What the hell? Do I even need to point out the absurd stupidity of that?

I didn't even know of all the baby mama drama. I was gonna look for it online to watch it, but I think I'll just live with the episodes I have watched and save myself from rolling my eyes.

Do you think he would post such nonsenes at a site directed at latina or asian women? Even if he did, he wouldn't be so blatant. For some reason, he believes he can come into black womens 'house' and infiltrate the place with such nonsense.

To be honest, I do not believe he is actually a white male. Whoever this cretin is, they are just trying to cause trouble and it is very convenient 'he' just happened to find this site to post it on!

Harry Potter's website is a very good site. Foxycleopatra, I think you need to read what he has had to say and why he says it. His blog is not trash, it is very smart and very well-reasoned. BW need to read Harry Potter's website and learn what not to become as women, and learn what decent men think of certain "dominant group" female behavior (in the case of his blog, white women). If you don't like it, don't read it, but don't inflate your personal opinion to some kind of fundamental truth about the worth of Harry Potter's blog. Foxycleopatra, I just saw that you might not be the one who was talking down Harry Potter. If it wasn't Harry's site you were talking about, then please ignore my reference to your name in my post above.

I don't know if he anyone heard the story behind the little girls being on stage but one of the girls was Lil' Wayne's daughter. Supposedly Lil' Wayne won some award and his daughter wanted to go on stage with him but she didn't and she was crying about it so he decided to bring her and I believe her friends on during the performance. Backstage BET's people did not want the kids to go on but but Drake and Lil' Wayne complained and they eventually allowed the girls to go on. It was a last second thing. Drake released an apology the next day because a lot of people didn't like that.

People. I don't want to delete anyone, but let me state this again more clearly.
NO CURSING! If you cannot make your points without profanity, then may I suggest vocab lessons.
If your post has been deleted, it is prob. because you have curse words contained therein.
